Beatty, Nevada – February, 2010

February 12–15, 2010

My wife said “Go have fun with the boys!, but be careful!”
“Of course, dear!”
Off I went.  Many of the same people, a couple of different places - and "The Road" that I missed out on the year before.
Another road in the desert...back to DVNP

Time for lunch - Shoshone, California

For the riders that were here last year, they took “The Road” on Sunday.  This is another twisty, mountain road that is located to the north of Death Valley National Park in the Inyo National Forest. There’s a bit of elevation, and this year – according to those that were there – it’s not quite as cold as last year.  I get my shot at it today.
First off, rolling across what seemed to be dozens of miles of vistas like these, then a left turn, then more of them, but now, they’re getting bigger:
Along US-95, north of Beatty, California
Lida Pass, west of Lida, Nevada
In the distance is the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California.  As the crow flies, roughly 80 miles away.  We’re at 7480’, and 8” to 12” of snow is on the ground.  Fortunately no ice or snow on the road at this point.  There is another range to cross before dropping into the Owens Valley.
A pause east of Big Pine, California along CA-168
Suffice it to say that this road is a twisty bit of fun – and that fun didn’t allow for photography.  This image, shot while the leaders waited for the riders to catch up turned out rather nice.

We then rolled into Bishop, CA and had our first experience of Erick Schat’s Bakery.  Mmmmm…yummy!

From here, we now loop back into the western entrance of DVNP, first along US-395…

Finally, more fun as we entered, then exited DVNP.  No pictures again.
Maybe next year.
